Whilst studying Fine Art at Bath Spa University I was introduced to the process of etching as a print form. I learnt the complicated process in workshops and in my free time. My work has always been influenced by the natural world. At University I concentrated on mineral and rock formation prints and at present I am working on prints based on organic forms which are carved and chiselled into stone to allow buildings to be more ornate, opulent and unique in design.
After dedicating many years as a full time college lecturer working hard to help students develop their own work, I had neglected my own practice and I realised it was now time to stop being envious of my students projects and make time for my own work again. Having moved back to teach in my home city Manchester in 2014, after not living in the region for over a decade, I am re-discovering the city again. Living in a busy city centre meant I could get rid of my car and explore Manchester by foot.
Walking around allows me to absorb the city and study the architectural structures surrounding me. Manchester has an eclectic mix of architectural influences from classical Italian Renaissance, Neo Gothic, Gothic and the industrial revolution and I want to capture these influences through my etchings. These etchings are a small snippet and a celebration of Mancunian architecture. I now print small batch prints at Hot Bed Press, a none profit printmakers studio operating in the Greater Manchester area.
